Southern Wayne's cross country outfit raced at Stoney Creek Park on Wednesday, managing a third-place finish amongst five area teams.

The Saints were led by Antonio Broadie, who finished second overall with a time of 19:19. Josh Raynor finished third with a time of 19:21.

Chris Monzingo, Davis Caudill and Ryan Norton also logged top-25 finishes.

The Lady Saints also performed well, as each runner earned personal best times.

Caroline Best completed the course in 26:39, while Eva Morales finished in 29:29. Alyssa Rose crossed the tape in 33:20.

"We have a young team," head coach Jessica Murray said. "But they are all very dedicated and showed a lot of spirit... they endured and never gave up."

Southern Wayne next sees action on Sept. 6 in Greenville.

Soccer

Spring Creek 4,

South Lenoir 0

Milton Bautista scored twice as Spring Creek ran away from South Lenoir, 4-0, on Thursday afternoon.

Alex Avila also scored for the Gators, as did Kevin Avila -- part of a 20 shots-on-goal barrage by SC.

Jose Reynega logged three assists, while Joshua Beckerman filed one.

Keeper Kevin Ulloa registered four saves for the Gators, who moved to 2-2-1 on the season.

Wayne Country Day 2,

Greenfield 1

Wayne Country Day rallied on to register a 2-1 victory over rival Greenfield on Thursday.

Ben Cohen assisted on goals by Nehemiya Shaw and Luis Lopez, who nailed the game-winner.

"It was a good game, as expected," said WCDS coach Steve Ellis. "The lads didn't drop their heads when going behind and deservedly won the game in OT."

Wayne Christian 4,

New Life Christian 1

Jeremy Bentley filed a hat trick (three goals) on Thursday for Wayne Christian, who dismissed New Life Christian in runaway fashion.

Jaxon Anderson also netted a goal. Keeper Brian Jones stopped nine New Life shots on goal.

Hobbton 3,

Princeton 1

The Princeton Bulldogs played their first soccer match in two years Thursday, absorbing a 3-1 defeat to Carolina 1-A foe Hobbton.

Luke Brush, Brandon Munoz, Juan Bautista (goal) and Fernando Ferreyra all performed ably for Princeton, who held the Wildcats scoreless in the opening half.

PHS next sees action next Wednesday at Neuse Charter.

Goldsboro 1,

Greene Central 0

Chandler Patrick scored with just over a minute remaining to give Goldsboro High a 1-0 triumph over Greene Central on Thursday evening.

Keeper Matt Lewis had 12 saves for the Cougars, who travel to face Wilson Beddingfield next week.

Tennis

C. B. Aycock 8,

Eastern Wayne 1

Charles B. Aycock won its match versus ECC 3-A and county rival Eastern Wayne on Thursday by a 9-1 margin.

Meredith Jones, Karyln Ray, Lexi Reeves, Hannah Tyndall and Michaela Boyd all emerged victorious in singles play.

Jones-Lane, Ray-Reeves and Abbie Shackelford-Sophia Gumbush won the doubles portion of the match, 9-7, 8-2 and 9-7, respectively.

The triumph moved the Lady Blues to 6-2 overall and 3-0 in conference play.

Clinton 5,

Rosewood 3

After nearly four hours, the Lady Dark Horses of Clinton outlasted Rosewood, 5-3, in a non-conference match on Thursday.

The triumph moved Clinton to 1-1 on the season.

J.H. Rose 9,

Southern Wayne 0

Southern Wayne dropped an ECC 3-A contest to mighty J.H. Rose, 9-0, on Thursday.

New Bern 9,

Southern Wayne 0

Southern Wayne dropped its conference match at New Bern, 9-0, on Wednesday.

Kylee Tyndall and Brittany Paniagua emerged victorious (8-7) in an exhibition match against the Bears.

Volleyball

J.H. Rose 3,

C.B. Aycock 0

Charles B. Aycock dropped in straight sets to J.H. Rose, 25-22, 25-18 and 25-19, on Thursday.

Senior Arlanda Faulkner led the Lady Blues with 22 kills, while four players -- Daelyn Brock, Hannah Carter, Cassandra Lassiter and Faulkner -- registered at least 16 digs.

The setback moved C.B. Aycock to 2-2 overall, and 1-1 in ECC play.

New Bern 3,

Eastern Wayne 0

Eastern Wayne suffered at the hands of New Bern, 25-19, 25-11 and 25-14 on Thursday.

The junior duo of Bethany Williams and Alana Kazar combined for 16 digs, while Naomi Williams filed five assists.

The lady Dubs are now 2-5 on the season, and winless in conference play.

South Central 3,

Southern Wayne 0

Southern Wayne fell in straight sets to South Central on Thursday, 25-16, 25-21 and 25-10.

Alexus Elliott had six blocks and three players -- Emonny Jones, Kya Hunter and Daylan Wiggs -- recorded four digs apiece.

The Saints next take the court on Tuesday at New Bern.

Princeton 3,

Rosewood 1

Princeton defeated Rosewood in four sets Wednesday by a 25-20, 22-25, 25-10, 25-23 margin.

Emily Ricks and Kalli Jones had 12 kills apiece for the Bulldogs, who moved to 2-3 overall and 2-0 in Carolina 1-A play.

Freshman Meredith Wooten led all players with 35 assists.

Braylee Butts and Torree Marak provided eight and 10 kills, respectively, for Rosewood.

 The setback pushed RHS to 4-5 overall and 1-1 in matters of league significance.

Wayne Christian 3,

Pope John Paul 0

Wayne Christian began CPIC league play on Thursday with a 25-8, 25-12, 25-19 conquest of Pope John Paul.

Leading the way for WC was Hope Shook, who had 14 kills and five aces. Ashlee Harrellson registered nine kills, while Kasey Norris provided 33 assists.

The triumph moved the Lady Eagles to 2-3 overall and 1-1 in conference play.

Cape Fear Christian 3,

Wayne Christian 1

Wayne Christian lost in four sets to Cape Fear Christian on Friday, 25-17, 14-25, 19-25 and 17-25.

Ashlee Harrellson and Sarah Sawyer had seven kills apiece, while Holley Gurley contributed 23 digs.

Hope Shook also added 17 kills. Senior Kasey Norris filed 37 assists.

Wayne Christian now stands 2-4 overall this season.  

Lakewood 3,

North Duplin 0

North Duplin dropped in hurried fashion to Lakewood on Thursday, 25-13, 25-13 and 25-21.

Callie Thornton had three kills for the Lady Rebels, and senior Anna Thornton provided nine assists.

Abbey Pate filed seven digs.

North Duplin is now 3-3 overall this season, and winless in Carolina 1-A play.

Midway 3,

Spring Creek 0

Midway turned back Spring Creek in 25-17, 25-9, 25-19 fashion on Tuesday.

Wayne Country Day 10,

Greenfield 1

A hat-trick (three goals) by Preston Barnes led WCDS to a 10-1 bruising of rival Greenfield on Thursday.

The quartet of Michael Geer (2 goals), Thomas Gurley (3 goals), Hunter Lippold (1 goal) and Daniel Sharp (1 goal) all performed well for the Chargers, who dominated the match from the outset.

Connor Sasser and Geer had two assists each, while Ben Stuber, Jack Cole, Tanner Willman and Gurley each contributed one.

Princeton 3,

Rosewood 0

Princeton defeated Rosewood 25-14, 25-21 and 15-8 on Thursday.

Kari Drake had four service aces for the Lady Eagles, while Madison Tyndall had five assists.

Lakewood 2,

North Duplin 0

North Duplin fell to Lakewood 25-8, 25-12 on Thursday.

The setback moved the Lady Rebels to 3-2 overall and 0-2 in Carolina 1-A play.

Midway dealt Spring Creek a conference defeat on Tuesday by a 25-11, 27-25 margin.
