CBA's Waddell hurls 1-hit, mercy-rule shutout

Taylor Waddell carried a no-hitter into the fifth inning and Charles B. Aycock rolled past Eastern Wayne, 20-0, in mercy-rule fashion on Saturday afternoon.
The Golden Falcons (23-1 overall) finished 12-0 against Eastern Carolina 3-A/4-A Conference competition this season. Aycock collected its 12th ECC regular-season championship in program history since 2003.
Emily Uzzell spoiled Waddell's no-hitter with a single in the bottom of the fifth inning. Waddell retired six Warriors on strikeouts.
Taylor Puetz (four RBI) and Connor Vinson pounded out four hits apiece for the Golden Falcons. Mackenzie Wheeler smacked a pair of doubles during a 3-for-5 outing at the plate.
Mookie Powell, Allison Shingleton (two RBI), Cara Lenzi (three RBI) and Waddell each registered two hits. Hannah Vinson (three RBI), Allie Phillips and Leah Campbell each had one hit.
Aycock returns home Wednesday for opening-round action in the 2016 N.C. High School Athletic Association playoffs.
