Playoff bids released
* Wayne Country Day earned an opening-round bye and Wayne Christian will travel when the N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association Class 1-A playoffs begin Tuesday.
An at-large selection, Wayne Country Day (11-7-1 overall) drew the No. 4 seed and awaits the winner of the Greenfield-Northeast Academy game on Friday. Chargers head coach Michael Taylor said first pitch is scheduled for 4:30 p.m.
The Chargers are 13-13 in the postseason since 2003. Taylor guided his team to the 2007 state title --the first in school history. His 2012 team fell to Lawrence Academy in the best-of-three finals.
Greenfield is the reigning state champion.
Wayne Christian, the Carolina Christian Conference automatic qualifier, received the No. 10 seed. The Eagles, directed by first-year head coach Dustin Dupre, are the guests of Statesville Christian.
The Eagles eliminated the Lions, 2-1, in a first-round game in 2013.
Wayne Christian is making its 13th straight playoff appearance, and is 10-12 overall during that stretch.
The top four seeds, in order, are: Oakwood School (20-2), perennial giant Lawrence Academy (21-5), Kerr-Vance Academy (18-3) and WCDS. First-, second- and third-round games will be played at the higher-seeded team.
The best-of-three state championship series is May 20-21 at historic Fleming Stadium in Wilson.
