PIKEVILLE -- Mackena Batts sparked an early 9-2 fourth-quarter run and D.H. Conley battled from behind to defeat Charles B. Aycock, 53-51, in Eastern Carolina 3-A/4-A Conference play Tuesday evening.
Batts scored eight consecutive points, incuding a conventional three-point play, to help push the Vikings ahead 49-45 with roughly a minute left in regulation.
Aycock closed the gap to a single possession, 53-51, after Tanika "Mookie" Powell knocked down two free throws with 9.4 seconds to go. Powell stole the ensuing inbounds pass and passed back upcourt to Taylor Daniels.
Daniels' shot missed as time expired.
"That was a pretty tough loss right there, made it a close game when it shouldn't have been a close game," CBA head coach Roy Harrell said. "I stopped counting at 10 point-blank shots around the basket that we just didn't convert. We didn't finish those plays tonight."
Powell finished with a game-high 22 points, including a 14 of 19 effort at the free throw line. Daniels chipped in 12 points. Destiney Washington added eight points.
The Golden Falcons converted more free throws (25) than field goals (13) as they dropped to 8-4 overall and 1-1 against ECC opposition this season.
Batts finished with 15 points, while speedy guard Lavivica Wilson added 16 points. Conley exited 4-7 overall and evened its ECC worksheet to 1-1.
