PIKEVILLE -- Down three possessions and with the ball, Charles B. Aycock dribbled upcourt and turned the ball over inside the free throw circle.

D.H. Conley scored.

Seconds later, the Golden Falcons committed a foul and Shykeef Daniels drained both charity shots. Teammate Eric Robertson missed two free throws, but Tyler Justice's offensive putback gave Conley a 12-point lead with 2:02 left in regulation.

Aycock never recovered.

The Golden Falcons failed to convert a basket in the final 4-plus minutes and endured a 51-37 defeat on the Eastern Carolina 3-A/4-A Conference scene Tuesday evening.

"That was a pivotal point in the game," Aycock head coach David Elmore said. "We got the stop, I don't exactly remember how, but we came back down and we were too quick to try to make something happen instead of being patient.

"What we saw tonight from that team is what we've been doing to the seven teams that we beat. They beat us at our own game."

Conley (2-12 overall, 1-1 ECC) played a methodical offense that involved consistent passing on the perimeter until a lane to the basket opened up. The Vikings' Kendrick Greene, who dished out a team- and game-high six assists, helped create a consistent flow in the offense.

Aycock led 10-8 after one quarter, but entered halftime down 26-19. The Vikings extended their advantage to as many as 14 points before the Golden Falcons (7-6, 1-1) rallied in the fourth.

That's when Elmore's club found its rhythm again.

Cam Kornegay and Keyshawn Cobb each drained a 3-pointer. Ty Ford converted two drives to the basket, which closed the gap to 43-37 with 4:16 to go on the clock.

Conley sealed the outcome with an 8-0 run.

"We had some moments where I felt like we didn't make some good decisions and I think Aycock, being a good team, did a good job capitalizing on them and closing the gap and made things tight tonight," DHC head coach Rob Maloney said.

Cobb emerged as the Golden Falcons' top scorer with eight points. Kornegay and Ford (four assists, four rebounds) chipped in seven points apiece.

Aycock made 14 field goals and attempted nine free throws.

Justice led DHC with a double-double -- 17 points, 15 rebounds.

"That was a by-product of other kids executing around him and to his credit finishing around the basket," Maloney said. "Once you get a couple of makes, your confidence level does tend to go up."
