The ball crossed half court.

Then it returned two feet from the center line.

Faith Christian Academy's Chloe Mills received a backcourt violation early in the first quarter, but from that point on, she pushed her team forward to a 45-34 victory at home over Trinity Christian on Tuesday evening.

Mills dropped her head after the call.

She quickly lifted her chin, jumped back on defense and blocked a TCA shot, which led to a steal from FCA's sophomore Jordan Lawhon. The Conquerors tied the Tigers 10-all before the second quarter.

Down by two points, Mills tossed up a shot with one minute remaining before halftime, scored the basket and drew a foul. She sank the free throw, and the Conquerors led the Tigers, 19-18, midway through the game.

Senior Olivia Pierce grabbed a defensive rebound and assisted Mills with two more points to start the third quarter. Lawhon pulled down a rebound and passed the ball to senior Meredith Skinner for a 3-pointer. Lawhon drove the length of the court for a layup.

FCA led, 31-23, at the end of third quarter action.

Both teams dove for a rebound, and an official called jump ball. The Tigers gained possession and Kendell Varnell made a field. Hannah Woolard and assisted Kristen Woolard on another field goal.

TCA trailed FCA, 34-27, with five minutes left in regulation.

But Lawhon assisted Mills with a layup. Lawhon stole the ball from the Tigers at half court and launched the ball to Skinner, who scored. The Conquerors (5-4 overall) cruised from there.

Mills and Lawhon ended the game with 15 points apiece. Skinner added 11 points for the Conquerors (5-4 overall).

"It was probably a career high. She's (Mills) an eighth grader," said FCA head coach Jeff Stocks, whose team plays host to N.C. Christian Schools Association 2-A rival Bethel Christian on Friday. "My best athletes are eighth and ninth graders. We're young, and we're getting better every game."

Kristen Woolard scored 14 points for the Tigers. Hannah Woolard and Varnell recorded five points each.
