EDENTON -- After an 0-2 start, Wayne County Post 11 is starting to find its stride on the baseball diamond.

Coy Barnett and Jack Casbarro each emerged victorious on the mound as Wayne County swept Edenton, 10-0 and 6-1, in an Area I East Division doubleheader contested at historic Hicks Field.

Barnett threw a one-hitter and retired four Edenton batters on strikeouts in a complete-game effort. Officials called the game after five innings due to the mercy rule.

Chad Spurgeon paced the offense with two hits, two RBI and a stolen base. Hank Smitherman, Lee Daniels and Bobby Hampton contributed one hit apiece. Smitherman stole a base, while Hampton made his Senior Legion debut.

Casbarro, a rising sophomore at Southern Wayne, held Edenton to two hits and logged two strikeouts in a two-inning stretch in the nightcap. Spurgeon and Trent Herndon combined for five innings of four-hit, four-strikeout relief.

Zack Smith (two RBI), Allen Coor (two RBI), Casbarro and Sawyer Smith (two RBI) provided two hits apiece.

Less than 24 hours earlier, Wayne County endured a 1-0 loss to division nemesis Kinston Post 43 -- which scored the game-winning run in the sixth inning.

Jordan Gurley tossed a complete-game three-hitter. The right-hander scattered three hits, walked two and notched the strikeouts on the Doyle Whitfield Athletic Complex diamond.

Coor and Barnett combined for all three of Post 11's hits.

Landon Letchworth emerged as the winning pitch and Chad Ginn collected the save for Post 43. Letchworth played at Gardner-Webb this past spring.

Wayne County started its five games in a four-day stretch with a 12-8 road triumph over Apex on Friday.

Every starter reached base at least once for Post 11, which avenged an earlier mercy-rule loss to Apex. Barnett led the way with three hits. Kevin Williams ( two RBI), Spurgeon, Sawyer Smith and Hunter Barwick each cranked out two hits.

Gurley, Coor and Casbarro each had one hit.

Wayne County (8-3 overall, 3-1 Area I East) plays a pair of road games this week -- Tuesday at Morehead City and Thursday at Duplin-Sampson.
