Girls soccer

Eastern Wayne 4, Southern Wayne 1

* Eastern Wayne celebrated its senior night with a 4-1 victory over county rival Southern Wayne on Thursday.

Megan Mozingo score two goals and had two assists for the Warriors, who will gain the No. 1 playoff seed for the ECC 3-A portion for the second straight year.

Freshman Claire Molloy tucked away her eighth goal of the year, and Brennan Dove scored her 14th -- tied for the team lead with Mozingo.

Dixie Ramirez had the lone goal for Southern Wayne.

The Warriors will make their 14th consecutive trip to the playoffs after finishing 10-6 overall and 6-6 in ECC 3-A/4-A play.

A date and time for their playoff game has not been determined.

Princeton 4, Rosewood 2

* Princeton scored three goals in the second half and held off archrival Rosewood in Carolina 1-A conference action on Thursday evening.

Peyton Whitley, Madison Adkins, Kassandra Velasquez and Chelsea Hawley all scored for Princeton.

Lexi Mercer scored for Rosewood.

Hawley had an assist and Jessica Brush added an assist as well.

Princeton is 14-3 overall and 10-2 in conference action.

Goldsboro 9, Greene Central 0

* Ivey Wade had a hat trick as Goldsboro beat Greene Central 9-0 in 67 minutes on the Eastern Carolina 2-A scene Thursday.

Juanita Cortes-Torres scored two goals for Goldsboro and chipped in an assist. Angelina Nacca and Casey Pursifull each had a goal and two assists. Timaya Williams had one goal and one assist. Melissa Cox had one goal and Eymonie Atkinson had an assist to round out the scoring for the Cougars.

Goldsboro finished second in Eastern Carolina 2-A play with a 6-2 conference record. Their first round playoff matchup is to be determined.

Spring Creek 7, North Duplin 0

* Spring Creek waltzed passed North Duplin 7-0 in their regular season finale on Thursday evening.

Griselda Vazquez had two goals for the Gators. Rheanna Ried also had two goals for Spring Creek. Katlyn Sullivan, Jordan Lane and Yanelli Cervantes each chipped in a goal for the Carolina 1-A regular season champs.

Spring Creek is 14-2 and 12-2 in Carolina 1-A play.

Baseball

Charles B. Aycock 1, New Bern 0 (9 inn.)

* Jacob Naughton tossed a gem on the mound and Charles B. Aycock used great base running from Ashton McGee to upend New Bern 1-0 in nine innings on Thursday in Eastern Carolina 3-A/4-A action.

Naughton threw all nine innings to earn the shutout. He gave up four hits and one walk, and struck out 12.

Finally, in the ninth inning, Aycock was able to scratch across a run. McGee reached base on a single to start the inning. Then, senior Hank Smitherman came to the plate and laid down a sacrifice bunt. With no one covering third, McGee attempted to go from first to third on the bunt, and as the Bears scrambled to get to third, the first baseman threw the ball into left field to allow McGee to score on the two-base error.

"That's twice this year he's made that play," CBA coach Charles Davis said. "And last night they threw it away."

McGee had two hits to lead the Golden Falcons. Charlie Robertson, Naughton and Bryce Anders each had one hit.

Aycock finished the regular season 17-4 overall and 9-3 in conference action. Their first-round playoff game is to be determined.

Ayden-Grifton 5,

North Lenoir 4 (9 inn.)

* Ayden-Grifton had a walk off hit in the ninth inning to beat Eastern Carolina 2-A foe North Lenoir on Thursday evening.

Orlando Cannon had two hits, including a game-tying home run in the sixth.

North Lenoir is 13-6 overall and 8-2 in conference play. They will host a first round playoff game on a date to be determined.

Greene Central 17,

Goldsboro 2

* Justin Lee and Bryce Norman hammered Goldsboro into submission in a 17-2 mercy-rule victory in five innings on Thursday.

The duo combined for a double and three triples and drove in four runs.

Goldsboro finishes the season 1-17 overall and 0-10 in conference play.

Lawrence Academy 8,

Wayne Country Day 2

* Wayne Country Day surrendered five runs in the bottom of the fifth inning and watched its season slip away with an 8-2 loss to Lawrence Academy.

Mitch Turnage had two hits for the Chargers, including a double. John Strickland homored. Amane Godo and Drew Barnes each had a hit.

Wayne Country Day finished the year 9-9 overall.

Softball

Spring Creek 3, North Duplin 0

* Rachel McCollum had two doubles and threw a complete game shutout in the circle as Spring Creek upended Carolina 1-A foe North Duplin 3-0 on Thursday evening.

McCollum drove in a run with her offensive performance. That was enough to carry the Gators to a win as she was dominant in the circle. She surrendered two hits, and walked one. She struck out seven.

Rylee Pate was nearly as good, giving up four hits and two earned runs. She also struck out seven and walked one.

North Duplin is 12-3-1 and 10-2 in conference play.

Spring Creek is 12-3 overall and 9-3 in conference play.
