Less than an hour into his No. 2 singles match, junior Preston Edwards secured Wayne Country Day's first point.
A few minutes later, fourth-seeded Young Wang -- a sophomore -- shook hands with Lawrence Academy's Ian Huddleston after a straight-set win.
And so it went on a warm, breezy Tuesday afternoon.
Wayne Country Day handed Lawrence Academy a 5-1 defeat in opening-round play of the 2015 N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association Class 1-A dual-team boys' tennis playoffs. The third-seeded Chargers (8-5 overall) oppose defending state champion Oakwood at Barton College on Friday afternoon.
First serve is 4 p.m.
"I thought Preston held the charge, playing really consistent, winning easily and setting the a good tone for the team," said first-year WCDS head coach Blake Vail, who has no seniors on his 10-player roster.
The Chargers picked up singles wins from top-seeded Sam Dively, fifth-seeded Lance Davis and sixth-seeded Nolan Davis. Dively held a slim 4-3 first-set lead before reeling off the final eight games against the Warriors' Wyatt Corbett.
Lance and Nolan each found themselves competing for every point as several games went to deuce. Lance prevailed 6-3, 6-3, while Nolan outlasted his opponent 7-5, 6-3.
Jordan Daniels claimed the Warriors' lone point at No. 3 singles.
The doubles matches were not contested.
"I thought overall my guys played really solid," Vail said. "They have shown nice signs of improvement throughout the year."
