TEACHEY -- Max Hernandez booted a 33-yard field goal to put defending 1-AA state champion James Kenan up by three points with 10 minutes remaining Friday evening.
That was too much time for archrival Wallace-Rose Hill.
With under four minutes remaining, the top-seeded Bulldogs converted a 6-yard touchdown run and handed the Tigers a 34-31 loss in the N.C. High School Athletic Association Class 1-AA eastern regional championship.
W-RH avenged last year's loss to Kenan in the regional final.
Tigers quarterback Ken Avent III played near-flawless football, completing 11 passes for 188 yards and three touchdowns without turning the ball over. Greg Washington had two catches for 67 yards and two touchdowns.
Avent III added 92 yards rushing on 19 carries. JaQuan Williams ran for 112 yards and a touchdown on 17 carries.
Juniors John Brooks and Donta Mason led the Tigers' defense with nine tackles apiece, and Juan Hooper recovered a fumble.
Hernandez drilled all four of his extra-point attempts.
James Kenan finished the year 12-2 overall.
