Preps digest: JV, middle schools

JV

* Boys' basketball: Goldsboro Heat 54, Chatham Thunder-White 34 -- Gavin Portela emerged as the Heat's top scorer with 19 points, 13 rebounds and six assists. Cameron Yarbrough chipped in 11 points and snared seven rebounds. Harman Kaler provided 10 points.

* Boys' basketball: Goldsboro Heat 64, Chatham Thunder-Blue 49 -- Gavin Portela logged 18 points and and six steals. Josiah Simmons supplied 14 points. Harman Kaler knocked down 11 points. Goldsboro (3-4 overall, 3-1 NCHEAC South) plays again Tuesday.

Middle schools

* Boys' basketball: Chatham 42, Goldsboro Heat 33 -- Hayden Portela led the Heat with 14 points and six steals. Joe Rasmussen pulled down eight rebounds and scored four points. Benson Jones contributed eight points, four steals and five assists.

* Boys' basketball: St. Mary's 20, Wayne Country Day 15 -- Wayne Country Day couldn't find enough offense against St. Mary's. Sam Dively led the Chargers with five points. Tony Barbour scored four.

* Girls' basketball: Lee Christian 22, Wayne Christian 11 -- Abbi Harrelson and Madison Wells collected four points apiece in the Eagles' road loss. Beverly Tabe scored three points. Wawyne Christian (4-3 overall) returns to action Jan. 8, 2015, at Community Christian.
