MURFREESBORO -- Jordan McCain and Dontrell Brite each converted free throws in the final 17 seconds, and Mount Olive slipped past in-state foe Chowan University, 72-68, on Tuesday evening at the Jesse Helms Center.

Brite led four Trojans in double figures with 17 points. McCain scored 12 of his 13 points in the second half, while Kendall Hargrove and Michael Moore added 10 points apiece.

Dory Hines dished out eight assists, giving him 518 for his career and seven shy of breaking the school record.

Hargrove's putback with 1:48 left in the game ended Mount Olive's four-minute field goal drought and extended the Trojans' lead to three. Ashante Ross' layup with 1:21 left made it a one-point game before Brite hit 1-of-2 free throws with 46 seconds remaining.

Chowan had a chance for a tying or go-ahead basket, but McCain stole the ball with 17 seconds left and Mount Olive immediately called a timeout. The Trojans ran the clock down to six seconds when Brite was fouled.

After Brite hit both free throws, Tiron Brown hit a layup for Chowan with two seconds left to make it a one-possession game. But McCain was immediately fouled and hit both free throws to secure the victory.

Brite, McCain and Dominique Reed combined for 19-for-25 (76.0 percent) from the free throw line.

MOC (6-3) overall returns home Thursday for an in-state battle against Peach Belt member UNC Pembroke. Tip-off is 7 p.m.

WINTER PARK, Fla. -- Katie Paschal pumped in a career-high 35 points during Mount Olive's 89-43 thrashing of Bluefield State (W. Va.) on the final day of the Tars Holiday Classic.

A senior transfer from East Carolina, the sharp-shooting Paschal tied the third-highest, single-game total in program history. She shares it with Tangela Grant-Faulkner, who was inducted into the MOC Athletics Hall of Fame in late November.

Ty Wallace recorded a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Teammate Jasmine McDonald just missed a triple-double with nine points, 10 assists and eight rebounds.

Joneiqua Gary provided 14 points and five steals. Kirksten Mitchell contributed nine points and four rebounds, while Leah Graham chipped in eight points.

The Trojans shot 34 of 59 from the field.

MOC (6-3 overall) travels to Division I Elon University for an exhibition game Sunday. Tip-off is 2 p.m.
