MOC men blank in-state rival Catawba, 2-0

MOUNT OLIVE -- Mount Olive scored two second-half goals in a three-minute span and keeper Nick Bernsdorf preserved the advantage during a 2-0, non-conference triumph over Catawba at Amon Field on Wednesday evening.

Bernsdorf recorded three saves and his third shutout of the season.

Mount Olive (4-8-2 overall) kept the pressure on the Indian defense, but it was not until John Kwennah re-directed a chip from Craig Allan into the right corner of the goal at the 68-minute mark that the Trojans had a lead to work with.

Allan received a pass from teammate Kelly Keaton, then raced down the left sideline before sending a crossing shot. Kwennah got his foot on the ball as Catawba keeper Evan Harvey dove to cut off the angle to the net. Harvey pinned the ball against the post, but it was ruled the ball crossed the line.

Three minutes later, the Trojans struck again.

Tyler Vandevender served a perfect pass to Tanner Tolston who headed the ball into the right corner. Kwennah and Tolston each have two goals this season.

MOC travels to Belmont Abbey on Saturday.

Volleyball

MOUNT OLIVE -- Sarah Robertson recorded a team-high 10 kills, but Mount Olive fell to rival Barton 25-20, 25-20, 25-16 in a Conference Carolinas women's volleyball match Wednesday evening at Kornegay Arena..

The loss snapped the Trojans' three-match home winning streak -- all in conference play.

Carly White finished with seven kills for Mount Olive, while Ashlee Reuter and Danielle Plante added six kills apiece. Nicole Karas recorded 30 assists and Nicole Sparks finished with 16 digs.

Mackey had a team-high three blocks.

The Trojans (8-13 overall, 4-8 CC) play host to the MOC Classic on Friday and Saturday. The four-team, round-robin event includes Fayetteville State, Armstrong Atlantic and Pfeiffer.

Women's soccer

MARS HILL -- Mount Olive had its four-match winning streak and three-match shutout streak snapped during a 3-0 loss to South Atlantic Conference member Mars Hill on Wednesday evening.

The Trojans were outshot by a narrow 10-9 margin but Mars Hill scored a goal in the opening minutes of each half to go onto the win.

MOC goalie Carolin Edenhofner recorded three saves.

The Trojans (5-8-1 overall) visit Belmont Abbey on Saturday.
