BREVARD -- John Mendoza scored the tying goal with 42 seconds left in regulation, and Mount Olive College battled to a 1-1 draw with in-state rival Brevard on Sunday afternoon.
The Tornadoes (0-2-1 overall) seized a one-goal advantage on a deflection in the 12th minute. Jaime Villacis' service beat the Trojan defense and set up Jami Uuttu one-on-one with goalie Brad Newman. Newman deflected the shot, but the ball rolled into the empty net.
On the verge of suffering yet another one-goal defeat, Mount Olive (0-1-1) drew a foul just outside the 18-yard box in the final minute. Vince Fluellen tapped the ball to Mendoza on the restart, and Mendoza put it in the upper 90 to even the match at the 89-minute, 18-second mark.
Brevard threatened to win in the second overtime on a pair of direct kicks within 30 yards of the goal. The MOC wall deflected one shot and another shot sailed wide left of the pipes.
The Trojans travel to Chowan on Wednesday.

* BLACK MOUNTAIN -- Forward Sam Weiss collected the game's lone goal in the 42nd minute and goalie Meagan Robeson perserved the shutout in Mount Olive's 1-0 victory over Truett-McConnell on Sunday afternoon.
The Trojan finished 1-0-1 in the two-day Montreat College women's soccer tournament.
Caroline Smith set up the game-winning goal by playing a deep ball to Casandra Serje, a freshman from Fayetteville. Serje touched the ball around a defender and passed the ball back across the six-yard box to Weiss, who pushed the ball into the net for her first goal of the season.
Robeson, a freshman from Jacksonville, faced only two shots on goal from the Bears (3-3-0), but saved both in collecting the shutout. Mount Olive, now 1-1-1 on the season, recorded 10 shots.
"It was a good team effort today," Mount Olive head coach Matt Hisler said. "The girls really worked well together out there."
The Trojans kick off the home portion of their schedule Wednesday against Columbia College. Game time is 6 p.m. at Amon Field.
