KINSTON -- Kinston hurler T.J. House recorded a career-high 10 strikeouts in his Carolina League debut, but couldn't get any run support in a 5-1 loss to Winston-Salem on Sunday afternoon.

The 20-year-old House permitted two runs on six hits and walked one batter.

Winston-Salem (2-2 overall) broke up House's shutout bid in the third inning. Kyle Shelton singled and scored on Brandon Short's RBI triple. Short crossed the plate on Eduardo Escobar's sacrifice fly.

The Dash added late three insurance runs late.

Kenny Williams Jr. and Drew Garcia delivered back-to-back, two-out RBI hits in the top of the eighth inning against K-Tribe reliever Travis Turek. Santo Frias replaced Turek and threw 11/3 hitless innings to go along with three strikeouts.

Kinston (2-2) tallied its lone run in the third inning.

Ronald Rivas doubled with two outs and touched home on Lucas Montero's single. Montero extended his on-base streak to 36 games at historic Grainger Stadium since June of 2009.

Kyle Bellows led the K-Tribe with two hits.

Kinston begins a three-game series at home today against Wilmington.

Mudcats still perfect

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- Daryl Thompson and two relievers combined on a two-hitter as Carolina remained undefeated in Southern League play with a 4-1 victory over Birmingham at Regions Park.

The Mudcats (4-0 overall) scored three first-inning runs on Denis Phipps' two-RBI single and Brandon Yarbrough's RBI groundout. Kris Negron provided an RBI single in the second inning.

Thompson (W, 1-0), who reached the major leagues with Cincinnati in 2008 before shoulder injuries permeated his career the majority of last season, was extremely effective in his season debut. He needed a double-play ball in the first inning, then proceeded to retire 10 straight and work four scoreless innings in 49 pitches.

Thompson was relieved in the fifth after allowing three of the first four Birmingham batters to reach base. Daryl Harang entered and wiggled out of the jam with a 4-1 lead. He did not allow a hit in his 32/3 inning debut of the season.

Philippe Valiquette pitched a perfect ninth to earn his first save.
