MILDRED COBB CARR

Mildred Cobb Carr, 87, Winston-Salem, died Aug. 18, 2018, in her home surrounded by her two children.

Mrs. Carr was born in Goldsboro, N.C., Oct. 7, 1930, the eldest daughter of four children of Dr. Donnell Borden Cobb and Sara Elizabeth Cobb.

She was a summer camper at Camp Merrie-Woode, which she loved so much that she sent her daughter and granddaughter.

She graduated from Goldsboro High School, attended Saint Mary’s College in Raleigh, N.C., and in 1953, graduated from Finch College in New York City.

She married Austin Heaton Carr Jr. in 1957, who pre-deceased her in 2016.

Austin served in the 9th U.S. Air Force in the European Theatre during World War II, and was a member of the first Air Force fighter group to operate on the continent after D-Day.

Together they lived in Winston-Salem, where they raised their daughter and son.

Mrs. Carr was a member of the Garden Club of America in Winston-Salem, the National Society of the Colonial Dames of America of North Carolina, the Debutante Committee of Winston-Salem, Saint Paul’s Episcopal Church, Old Town Club and the Coral Bay Club in Morehead City.

She is survived by her children, Laura Noell Carr and Donnell Borden Carr; her daughter-in-law, Hale Sneeden Carr; her grandson, Austin Christopher Carr; her granddaughter, Arabella Grace Carr; her two sisters, Sara Cobb Shores and Georgia Cobb Joyner, and her brother, Donnell Borden Cobb.

She was devoted to her family.

Caregivers Jeanette Patten, Mary Batista, Shirley Young, Shirley Gibbs and Johnny Maye Haywood brought comfort and meaning in her late years.

The family also wishes to express gratitude for the support of Hospice and Palliative CareCenter of Winston-Salem.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, Aug. 27, at Saint Paul’s Episcopal Church in Winston-Salem, with a reception following the service at Old Town Club, 2875 Old Town Club Road, Winston-Salem.

A graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, Aug. 27, at Carr family plot in Maplewood Cemetery in Durham.
