Henry Vance Modlin Jr., 87, Goldsboro, passed away peacefully after a period of declining health Friday, Aug. 3, 2018, at Transitions LifeCare in Raleigh.

Henry was born in Goldsboro Aug. 7, 1930, to the late Henry Vance Modlin Sr. and Luna Dixon Modlin.

He graduated from Goldsboro High School and attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he was a member of Kappa Sigma Fraternity.

After college, Henry returned to Goldsboro and joined the family business, Modlin Oil Co.

He lived a life of dedication to his family and friends and to his community. He was a member of St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church, serving in the choir, on the vestry, as the every member canvas chairman and as a capital campaign volunteer for Trinity Center at Pine Knoll Shores.

He was a member of Goldsboro Country Club, where he served as president, and was a member of the Goldsboro Jaycees for 10 years, serving as treasurer.

Henry also served for many years on First Citizens Bank and Trust Co. local board of advisors.

After selling Modlin Oil Co., he became a real estate broker.

In retirement, he developed a passion for watercolor, and graciously shared his talents with others.

Henry’s happiest days were spent at his vacation home, affectionately known as The Happy Hour, in Salter Path, N.C.

Henry is survived by his wife of 65 years, Sallie Settle Modlin; daughters, Ruth Ellett and husband, Scott, of Richmond, Va., Ginny Tyler and husband, Rob, of Raleigh and Mollie Brice and husband, Graham, of Wilmington; and grandchildren, Emily Brice, Sallie Ellett, Jamie Tyler and Vance Brice.

He is also survived by his sister, Betsy M. Snyder.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister and brother-in-law, Virginia and Paul Garrison.

The family wishes to extend special thanks to caregivers Lula Brake, Shana Pritchett and Theresa Kargbo.

A graveside service will be held Thursday, Aug. 9, 2018, at 11 a.m. at the family plot in Willow Dale Cemetery in Goldsboro.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church, 200 N. James St., Goldsboro, N.C., 27530, or Transitions LifeCare, 250 Hospice Circle, Raleigh, N.C., 27607.
