BARBARA SAVAGE SMEAL

May 16, 1938-June 4, 2018

Barbara Savage Smeal passed away peacefully the morning of June 4, 2018, while living at Sunrise of Raleigh at Crabtree.

Barbara was born May 16, 1938, in Chester, Miss., to Charles Jasper and Adelle Wilder Savage. She was married to retired Technical Sgt. Leon Smeal for 49 years, with 20 of those being an Air Force wife.

She attended Spring Hill Free Will Baptist Church and Highest Praise Tabernacle.

She enjoyed her work with children, especially babies, through her career as a childhood associate and preschool teacher for years in various daycares in Goldsboro.

Barbara received her associate degrees as a teacher associate and early childhood education in partnership with Wayne Community College and East Carolina Univesity.

Barbara and Leon were involved with activities associated with the American Legion, VFW, DAV and their auxiliaries as members, Wayne County Vets Council and organizing the Wayne County Veterans Day parade.

They placed flags on veteran’s graves on Memorial Day, and sponsored an annual essay contest through the Wayne County School system on Americanism.

The family will receive friends Wednesday, June 6, 2018, from 1 to 2 p.m. at Seymour Funeral Home, followed by a service to celebrate Barbara’s life at 2 p.m. in the chapel. Interment will be at Wayne Memorial Park.

Barbara was predeceased by a daughter, Emma Jean Smeal, and survived by her brother Charles, retired United States Marine Corps, (Joyce) of Collierville, Tenn.; daughter, Cynthia (Mark) Raleigh; son, Irvin (Madonna) of Orlando, Fla.; son, Aaron (Carrie) of Goldsboro; grandchildren, Chris and Mindy Smeal, Melissa Ysalgue and Brandon Smeal; and great-grandchildren, Hayden and Peyton Spencer, Alayna McCullen and Lukas Ysalgue’.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by her sisters, Evelyn and Margaret.
