Joan Gilliam York, of the Sleepy Creek community, died Friday at Kitty Askins Hospice Center after a lengthy illness and care at home by her loving daughters.

Born in Panama City, Fla., and raised in Valdosta, Ga., she was the daughter of the late Howard and Grace Turner Gilliam and was married to the late James Ervin York.

For many years, she managed the Sleepy Creek Golf Pro Shop and was well-known for her cooking skills and her hospitality extended to all. She was a member of Emmaus Baptist Church.

Her family will greet friends on Monday from 1 to 3 p.m. at Shumate-Faulk Funeral Home. A graveside service will be held Monday, April 16, at 3 p.m. at Emmaus Baptist Church Cemetery, with Rudy Peedin officiating.

She is survived by her fiancé, Thomas King, of Smithfield; daughters and sons-in-law, Sylvia York Fennell of Easley, S.C., Wanda "Pud" York Best and Ken of Clayton, Kathy York Fischel and Spanky of Fremont, Jerri York Whitley and Ricky of Goldsboro, Cristal York Marriner and Chuck of Beaufort, and Amy York Finkler of Bonaire, Ga.; grandchildren, Jimmy Best, Cliff Fennell, Melissa Robinson, Valerie Cantrell, Sara Fischel, Brandon Whitley, Joanna Shafer, Abby Finkler, Trent Finkler, and Parker Marriner; and 10 great-grandchildren.

In addition to her parents and her husband, she was preceded in death by an infant son, James E. York Jr. and an infant daughter, Patricia Ann York; brother, Billy Gilliam; sister, Kathleen Becton; and her former fiancé, Leroy Batts.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial gifts be directed to Emmaus Baptist Church Cemetery funds, 714 Emmaus Church Road, Dudley, NC, 28333 or St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN, 38105-9956.
