Charles Layton Woodard, 84, passed away peacefully and went to be with his Lord Oct. 25, 2017.

Charles was living in Hilton Head, S.C., for the past five years, where he was close to the family of his son, Warren Woodard.

Charles was born and raised in Wayne County, N.C.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Frances Woodard; his infant son, Michael Woodard; his parents, William David Woodard and Estella "Wilkins" Woodard; his brothers, Melvin Woodard and Leamon Woodard; and his sisters, Jessie Parnell and Ann Giddings.

He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Warren and Leanne Woodard; his grandchildren, Aubree and Ryan Woodard; his brothers, Elwood Woodard and Harold Woodard; and his sisters, Essie Smith and Linda Shaver.

Charles was married to the love of his life, Frances "Lewis" Woodard, for 57 years until her passing in 2012.

Charles' life was greatly enriched by the time he spent as "Papa" to his two beautiful grandchildren, Aubree and Ryan.

Charles served his country in the United States Army from March 1954 until March 1956.

He moved to Washington, D.C., in 1958, and worked with the U.S. Department of Agriculture for 10 years as a contract analyst.

Charles returned to North Carolina in 1968, and worked as a contract negotiator for the Environmental Protection Agency until his retirement in 1978.

A service will be held for family and friends at Tee's Chapel Church in Smithfield, N.C., Saturday, Oct. 28.

Visitation will be at 3 p.m., followed by a service at 4 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Diabetes Association.
