MARCIA DRAKE BENNETT

Marcia Drake Bennett died peacefully on Sept. 28, 2017, in Goldsboro, N.C., surrounded by her children and grandchildren. She was born in Norfolk, Va., on June 7, 1932, and was the daughter of the late Mildred Michaux Drake and William Caswell Drake.

Mrs. Bennett graduated with honors from Duke University and married her beloved husband, the late Dr. Paul C. Bennett Jr. in September of 1954. They chose to make their home in Goldsboro where they raised their two children and Dr. Bennett practiced medicine for over 35 years.

Mrs. Bennett cofounded The Developmental School, Goldsboro's Þrst school dedicated to serving mentally handicapped students. The school became what is now Edgewood Community Developmental School, an important part of Wayne County's school system, and continues to serve students with disabilities.

Mrs. Bennett was an active member of St. Paul United Methodist Church where she served on the Altar Guild and Staff Parish Committee. She found great joy in sharing her strong faith and leading the youth of St. Paul as a counselor for the United Methodist Youth Fellowship.

She is survived by her children, Michaux Bennett McMillan and husband, Stuart, and Paul Clifford Bennett III and wife, Gina; grandchildren, Katherine Randolph McMillan, Paul Clifford Bennett IV and wife, Katie, and Lauren Michaux Bennett and wife, Melissa; sisters, Elizabeth Drake Berryhill and Patricia Drake Masius; numerous cousins, nephews and nieces and a wonderful team of caretakers that helped make the last years of her life more enjoyable.

She loved her family, friends, community and her church unconditionally and touched numerous lives with her deep faith and wise counsel. She will be greatly missed by all who beneÞted from her unending support, care and gracious hospitality.

A memorial service will be held at St. Paul United Methodist Church at 11 a.m. on Monday, Oct. 2, 2017. The family will receive friends in the church parlor following the service.
