John William Swink, 81, passed away Thursday, Aug. 31, 2017, at Kitty Askins Hospice Center surrounded by his family.

John was born in Burke County, N.C., Jan. 26, 1936, to the late Pink Swink and Lola Canipe Swink.

He proudly served his country for more than 20 years in the United States Marine Corps, serving in both Korea and Vietnam.

John enjoyed traveling and camping, but the Marine Corps was his passion.

John was a wonderful husband, father and grandfather, who will be greatly missed.

The family will receive friends Tuesday, Sept. 5, 2017, beginning at noon at Seymour Funeral Home, followed by a service to celebrate John's life at 1 p.m., with the Rev. Tom Hoogerland and Bill Garner officiating. Interment will follow at Eastern Carolina State Veterans Cemetery.

John is survived by his wife, Margaret Gantt Swink; daughter, Connie Vazquez and husband, Jose, of Goldsboro; sons, John W. Swink Jr. and wife, Cathy, of Pennsylvania and Jimmie W. Swink of Goldsboro; grandchildren, Joseph R. Vazquez, Anthony R. Vazquez, John W. Swink III, Christy Rice (Randy), Emily Splitt and Wesley Splitt (Stephanie); and seven great-grandchildren, including Jiraiya R. Vazquez, Zaria Vazquez and Anthony R. Vazquez Jr.

He is also survived by seven sisters and three brothers.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters and three brothers.

John would want to leave you with these words, "Once a Marine, always a Marine" and "Semper-Fi."
