BERSHA D. LEWIS

Sept. 6, 1925-July 17, 2017

Bersha D. Lewis, 91, died peacefully on July 17 after an extended illness. Born in Duplin County, she spent most of her long life in Mount Olive. She was a well-known and beloved member of the community.

Bersha graduated from what was known then as East Carolina Teachers College in Greenville. Three weeks after graduation, she married Wilson K. "Hooty" Lewis on June 14, 1945. Over the next 30 years she raised a family and spent her career as a teacher in the Duplin County and Goldsboro City Schools systems.

The Mount Olive First Baptist Church was her "home away from home." She was a devoted church member and participated in a wide variety of activities throughout the years. Perhaps her favorite time was spent with the J.O.Y. (Just Older Youth) group. She enjoyed many hours of fun and fellowship with her J.O.Y. friends.

Bersha is survived by a son, Wilson K. Lewis Jr. (Carlia) and a daughter, Suzanne Lewis (Drew Moore III). She is also survived by three grandchildren, Casey Lewis of Wilmington, Hannah Lewis of Charlotte, Will Haynes of Asheville, as well as a great-grandson, Nikola Haynes.

The family will receive friends on Thursday, July 20, from 10 to 11 a.m. at the Mount Olive First Baptist Church Christian Life Center, 202 N. Chestnut Street. A memorial service will follow at the Mount Olive First Baptist Church.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be sent to Mount Olive First Baptist Church or to the charity of one's choice.
