Died July 5, 2017

M. Ray Watson, 75, Goldsboro, entered the gates of heaven after passing away at Rex Healthcare Wednesday, July 5, 2017, surrounded by his family after a brief period of declining health.

Born in Goldsboro, N.C., to the late Millard and Inez Womble Watson, he relocated to Clayton, N.C.

Ray attended East Carolina University in Greenville, N.C. where he received his bachelor's degree in English and a master's degree in school administration.

Ray retired from Wayne County Public Schools after 30 years, serving as principal of Belfast Elementary, Fremont Elementary, Brogden Elementary, Spring Creek K-9 and Dillard Middle schools.

The family will receive friends Sunday, July 9, 2017, at 6 to 8 p.m. at Seymour Funeral Home.

A memorial service will be held Monday, July 10, 2017, at 4 p.m. in the chapel of Seymour Funeral Home, with the Rev. Clay Parker officiating.

Ray is survived by his two daughters, Karen Watson Russo (Anthony) and Tracy Watson Stubblefield (Tom); his four grandchildren, Anthony Russo II, Nicholas Russo, Tori Stubblefield and Taylor Stubblefield; his former wife, Sue Price Bennett (David); his sister, Fay Rhodes (Danny); as well as several nieces and nephews.

Ray's sister, Jean Game, passed away within hours of his death.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Association, P.O. Box 11454, Alexandria, Va., 22312.
