Ray Franklin Byerly, 85, passed away Saturday at Kitty Askins Hospice Center.

He was the son of the late Frank L. and Ruth Heatwole Byerly.

For 67 years, he was married to the late Kathleen Byerly.

Mr. Byerly was born in Harrisonburg, Va., and raised on the Byerly homestead.

He studied genetics at Penn State with Dr. Godfrey specializing in poultry science.

In 1969, he moved to Goldsboro, where he worked at Goldsboro Milling, Perdue Farms, Carroll's Foods and Prestage Farms.

He was a past member of the Elks Lodge, the Moose Lodge and the Lions Club.

A funeral service will be held Tuesday at 7 p.m.. in the chapel of Shumate-Faulk Funeral Home, with chaplain Mark Palmer officiating.

The family will receive friends following the service.

Mr. Byerly is survived by his children, Patricia "Tish" A. Byerly, Barbara B. Davis and Dwight L. Byerly and wife, Linda, all of Goldsboro; a grandson, Kevin Ray Byerly of Charlotte; special friends, Jackie Pope and Stephen Clinton; and his beloved dog, Baxter.
