Franklin James Vinson, Mount Olive resident, passed away late Wednesday night, Nov. 16, at Kitty Askins Hospice Center.

Mr. Vinson was a native of Gordon, Ga.

He proudly served in the United States Air Force and the United States Army for a total of 21 years, which was followed by another 20 years of civil service employment.

He was awarded the Air Force Commendation Medal for heroic measures in preventing a would-be casualty situation from happening. Also, upon his military retirement, he was given the meritorious award.

His military career took him and his wife to many places. Indeed they enjoyed an exciting life together.

He was a loyal member of First Baptist Church of Mount Olive and its Loyal Soldiers Bible Class. He was also involved in the church's Baptist Men's organization, and was always eager to lend a hand in building handicapped ramps and refurbishing used bicycles for needy children.

He was also a member of the local Veterans of Foreign Wars post.

Mr. Vinson is survived by his wife of 58 years, Carolyn Herring Vinson; two daughters and sons-in-law, Brenda V. and Kurt Hesse of McGee's Crossroads near Benson and Connie V. and Tony Robinson of Mount Olive; two sisters, Margaret Wimberly of Milledgeville, Ga., and Hazel Clance and husband, Johnny, of Macon, Ga.; his beloved grandchildren, Lindsey Owens and husband, J.R., Paige Nicole Robinson, Morgan Hesse, Blake Hesse and Logan Robinson; and three dear great-grandchildren, Mason, Matthew and Landyn Owens.

The family will receive friends at Tyndall Funeral Home from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 18, and at other times, at the residence.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, Nov. 19, at 11 a.m. at the funeral home, officiated by Dr. Dennis Atwood, with burial following at Wayne Memorial Park. Full military honors will be rendered for this true American patriot's faithful service.

Flowers are welcome or memorial gifts may be made to First Baptist Church, P.O. Box 239, Mount Olive, N.C., 28365, or the North Carolina Veterans Home, 2150 Hull Road, Kinston, N.C., 28501.
