Retired Chief Master Sgt. Shelton Lee Daye died of complications due to pneumonia following a stroke Nov. 12, 2016, in Smithfield, N.C.

Chief Daye is survived by his daughters, Shelboni Ramey and Sherri Daye Scott; his grandsons, Stacey Lee Daye-Edwards and Judah Anderson Scott; his older sister, Ruby Daye-Waller; his nephew, Lamont Waller (Tiffany) and niece, Carrissa Dixon (Earl) and their children, (Christopher and Earl Jr.; his godchildren, Joe and Judy Leonard and their children (Cameron, Samuel and Sarah); and a host of relatives and friends and colleagues he touched while living in Durham, Myrtle Beach, Madrid, Beale Air Force Base, Seoul, Abilene, Texas, Aviano Air Base and Goldsboro.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 33 years, Christine Carrington Daye, and his parents, William Lee and Georgia Mae (Parker) Daye.

Chief Daye was born Feb. 10, 1954, in Durham, N.C.

In 1974, he joined the United States Air Force. He served 33 years at bases in South Carolina, Spain, California, Texas, Italy, Korea and North Carolina.

Chief Daye was a great family man, a loving husband and father and engaged member of his community.

He was deeply involved in the Merrick Moore High School Alumni Association, and rarely missed a North Carolina A&T home football game.

He enjoyed cooking, fishing, hunting and laughing with loved ones. His family and friends will always remember him as someone who loved and gave unconditionally.

A funeral service is scheduled for 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 19, 2016, at Peace Missionary Baptist Church (2608 N.C. 55, Durham, N.C., 27713), with visitation to precede at noon. All are welcome to attend and celebrate his life.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks mourners to make a donation in his name to his first detachment, North Carolina A&T's Air Force Reserve Officer Training Corps Detachment 605, the "Screaming Blackbirds.
