Walter Talmage Thigpen Jr., 71, died Sunday at Kitty Askins Hospice Center.

He was born in Wayne County to the late Walter Talmage and Lillian Mae Dale Thigpen, and was married to the late Anne Margaret Lane Thigpen.

A member of St. Joseph United Methodist Church, he was a veteran of the United States Army, where he served during the Vietnam War.

A retired pharmacist with Food Lion, he had previously owned and operated Thigpen Pharmacy.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 7 p.m. at Shumate-Faulk Funeral Home and Crematory Inc. of Goldsboro.

The family will receive friends immediately following the funeral.

A graveside service will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. at Pikeville Cemetery.

Talmage is survived by his sons and daughters-in-law, Travis L. and Beth Thigpen of Pikeville, Tony Thigpen of Pikeville and Ira Talmage "Thigie" and Cindy M. Thigpen of Goldsboro; five grandchildren, Ginger T. Winter, Elizabeth A. Thigpen, Courtney Thigpen, Victoria Thigpen and Timothy L. Thigpen; and two great-grandchildren, Railee Winter and Kade Winter.
