He graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School in 1942, and in the fall of that year, enrolled as a freshman in the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

After completing his freshman year, he enlisted in the United States Coast Guard. Later commissioned as an ensign, he served for 18 months during World War II on the USS Wakefield (AP-21) in the Atlantic, Mediterranean and Pacific theaters of operation.
