EDNA AYCOCK HOOKS

Edna Aycock Hooks, 99, passed away Saturday, Jan. 16, 2016, at Spring Arbor of Rocky Mount.

A native of Fremont, N.C., Edna Hooks was born Jan. 25, 1916, the youngest of nine children of Lafayette and Sena Massey Aycock.

She grew up a farm girl, and married Thurman Hooks in 1938. They lived in Fremont, and owned Fremont Wholesale Corp. until their retirement in 1978.

Edna was a longtime member of Fremont United Methodist Church, where she sang in the choir for more than 60 years. She was active in her church and community, and will be missed for her happy, friendly manner and her willingness to help others.

Edna was preceded in death by her parents and siblings, as well as her husband.

She is survived by her children, Clark (Nancy) Hooks of Winston-Salem, N.C., and Jeannie Gibbs of Rocky Mount, N.C.; and her grandchildren, Greg (Sue) Hooks of Wellington, Fla., Tammy (David) Schumacher of Lantana, Texas, Chris (Linda) Gibbs of Concord, N.C., and Clay (Camille) Gibbs of Raleigh, N.C.

She also leaves five great-grandchildren, Lindsey Hooks, Christian Schumacher, Carson Schumacher, Rachel Gibbs and Brady Gibbs.

The family will receive friends and relatives Wednesday, Jan. 20, 2016, from 10 to 10:45 a.m. in the fellowship hall of Fremont United Methodist Church.

A service to remember Edna will follow at 11 a.m. in the church sanctuary. Burial will follow at Elmwood Cemetery in Fremont.

A special thank-you goes out to all friends and relatives who visited, called and prayed for Edna, especially during these last few years when she had to leave her beloved Fremont and live in Spring Arbor of Rocky Mount.

To the staff at Spring Arbor, thank you for your love and care, especially during this last week.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Fremont United Methodist Church's music program.

The family is in the care of Shackleford-Howell Funeral Home in Fremont.
