VERNON CARTER

Cleo Vernon Carter, 80, resident of Garner's Chapel community near Mount Olive, passed away suddenly Sunday morning, Dec. 27.

He had served in the U.S. Army, was retired with White's Tire Service and was a member of Bethel United Methodist Church, Mount Olive.

Vernon is survived by his wife, Essie Rose Barwick Carter, of the home; a son, Ronald A. Carter and his wife, Emma, of Clinton; three daughters, Gail Herring and her husband, Steve, of Calypso, Connie Strickland and her husband, Robert, of Raleigh and Susan Dianne Topham of Dunn; a sister, Ethelene Swisher of Greenville; and a brother, Clarence Carter, and his wife, Mable, of Fayetteville; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Vernon was the son of the late Owen Lee and Bertha Mae Smith Carter and was preceded in death by a son, Anthony Wayne Carter; three brothers, Anderson Carter, Franklin Carter and Herbert Carter; and a granddaughter.

A service to remember and celebrate his life will be held Tuesday, Dec. 29, at 2 p.m. from the chapel of Tyndall Funeral Home in Mount Olive.

The Rev. Wanda Simmons will officiate with burial following in Maplewood Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home one hour prior to the service on Tuesday starting at 1 p.m.
