George Edward Jones Sr., 84, Goldsboro, passed away early Monday morning, Dec. 28, 2015, at Rex Hospital surrounded by his family.

George was born in Wayne County Dec. 8, 1931, to the late Kermit Sidney Jones and Dollie Newell Jones.

He retired from Pine State Milk Co. after 40 years of service in Goldsboro.

George was a charter member of Thoroughfare Fire Department.

He proudly served his country in the United States Army during the Korean War.

George was a rare treasure to his family and friends. He was loved by all who knew him, and will be greatly missed.

George shared many wonderful stories and teaching experiences with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He was a lifelong member of Providence United Methodist Church.

The family will receive friends Wednesday, Dec. 30, 2015, from 10 to 11 a.m. in the fellowship hall at Providence United Methodist Church, followed by a service celebrating George's life at 11 a.m. in the sanctuary, with the Rev. Dusty Sprouse officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery with military honors.

George is survived by his wife of 64 years, Maude Geraldine Jones; children, Edward Jones, Sharon Ackiss and husband, Warren, Greg Jones and wife, Alice, and Carolyn Thompson and husband, Lee; grandchildren, Dennis Sterling Jones, Crystal Annette Davis and husband, David, Brandon Jones and wife, Michelle, Danielle McClanahan and husband, Ian, Jason Ackiss and wife, Julie, Melanie Caroon and husband, Josh, Emily Odom and husband, J.R., Heather Jones, Karen Viehweger and husband, Nathan, Georganna Thompson and Jesse Thompson; and 13 great-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Dennis Gerald Jones; granddaughter, Katie Jones; two brothers; and one sister.

Flowers are welcome or memorials may be given in his memory to the Children's Wing of Providence United Methodist Church, 202 Providence Church Road, Goldsboro, N.C., 27530.
