HELEN PITTMAN TYSON

Dec. 9, 1917-Dec. 3, 2015

Helen Pittman Tyson, Fayetteville, born Dec. 9, 1917, in Wayne County, daughter of Needham and Lanie Pittman, departed the land of the dying to the land of the living Dec. 3, 2015, at home surrounded by her family and dedicated caregivers, Saundra Dickes and Lavonda Pate.

Funeral services will be held Monday, Dec. 7, 2015, at 2 p.m. in Jernigan-Warren Chapel, with the Rev. Archie Barringer officiating. The burial will follow in Tyson Family Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home one hour prior to the service.

Mrs. Tyson was preceded in death by her husband of 64 years, Upton Tyson; her sisters, Sallie Morris, Fannie Nichols, Minnie Pierce, Louise Waddell, Olive Edwards and Andrey Hinnant; and her brothers, Roland Pittman and Willard Pittman.

Left to cherish her memory are daughter, Patsy White (Thomas); son, Vance Tyson (Rebecca); five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

She was a 1936 graduate of Louisburg College.

After graduation from college, she was employed as a secretary at Middlesex Children's Home, and was later employed at the Pentagon during World War II.

She moved to Fayetteville, and was employed at Fayetteville Industrial Bank as a teller, where she met her husband, Upton.

Mrs. Tyson was a talented homemaker and gifted vocalist, and her alto was enjoyed and well known in Grays Creek community.

Mrs. Tyson was an active member of Sherwood Presbyterian Church and Grays Creek Woman's Club.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Grays Creek Woman's Club, 3024 School Road, Hope Mills, N.C., 28348, or charity of choice.
