Henson Perrymoore Barnes, Raleigh, formerly of Goldsboro and White Lake, died Nov. 22, 2015, in Raleigh, N.C.

He was born Nov. 18, 1934, to Lalon L. Barnes Sr. and Mable Cumbee Barnes of Bladen County, N.C.

Barnes was a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he received his Juris Doctor in 1961.

Barnes was the founding member of the law firm of Haithcock, Barfield, Hulse and Kinsey PLLC in Goldsboro.

He served the Goldsboro and Wayne County community in many civic capacities before being elected to the North Carolina House of Representatives in 1974.

In 1976, Barnes was elected to the North Carolina Senate, and represented Wayne and Greene counties in the senate until 1992. From 1988 until 1992 Barnes served as the president pro tempore for the North Carolina Senate.

While in the senate, Barnes sponsored bills that expanded the number of parks under the North Carolina Division of Parks and Recreation, increased the pay of public school teachers and provided for I-795 in Wayne and Wilson counties.

Barnes is survived by his daughter, Rebecca B. Kinsey and husband, Jay Kinsey, of Goldsboro, and daughter, Amy B. Patrick and husband, Ray Patrick, of Raleigh.

In addition, he is survived by three grandchildren, John Kinsey III, Jonathan Babb Jr. and Brooke Babb.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Catherine "Kitty" Allen Barnes.

A memorial service will be held at First Baptist Church in Goldsboro, 125 S. John St., at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 25, with the Rev. Dr. Glenn Phillips Jr. officiating.

Visitation will be at 9:30 a.m. in the church fellowship hall.

A graveside service will be held Wednesday at 3 p.m. at Beard's Chapel Cemetery 7626 U.S. 701 North, White Lake, N.C., with the Rev. Dr. David Elks officiating.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Springmoor Endowment Fund, 1500 Sawmill Road, Raleigh, N.C., 27615; First Baptist Church, 125 S. John St., Goldsboro, N.C., 27530; and Beard's Chapel Baptist Church, 6504 U.S. 701 North, Elizabethtown, N.C., 28337.
