Hugh Galloway Pate, 88, Goldsboro, passed away Monday, Sept. 7, 2015.

Hugh was born and raised in the Patetown community of Wayne County July 8, 1927, to the late Guy Martin and Nora Sasser Pate.

He owned and operated Wayne Implement in Goldsboro for many years.

Hugh was a tobacco auctioneer, and had been named to the Auctioneer Hall of Fame.

Hugh served his country in the United States Navy.

He was a member of First Baptist Church in Goldsboro.

Hugh lived a life of dedication to his family and friends and to his community.

He was a member of Harmony Masonic Lodge A.F. and A.M. in Pikeville, and was a Shriner. Hugh was a member of Golden K Kiwanis Club and also a member and past exalted ruler of Goldsboro Elks Lodge No. 139 B.P.O.E.

Hugh had a huge heart, always giving and reaching out to others, and there wasn't a stranger he hadn't met. Most would remember the joy that Hugh's presence would bring.

A service celebrating Hugh's life will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 9, 2015, at First Baptist Church in Goldsboro, with Dr. Glenn Phillips Jr. officiating. Interment with Masonic Rites will be at 11 a.m. Thursday in Wayne Memorial Park.

Hugh is survived by his wife, Rebecca "Becky" Bevell-Pate; son, Hugh G. Pate Jr. of Australia; granddaughter, Jennifer Pate; great-granddaughter, Callie of Morehead City; grandson, Galloway Pate of Morehead City; his nieces, Nan Lancaster Davis and husband, Jim, of Cary and Lynn Lancaster Gorges and husband, William, of New Bern; and a nephew, Martin Lancaster and wife, Alice, of Falls Church, Va.

He is also survived by his stepdaughter, Lorenda Bevell Overman and husband, Harrell, of Goldsboro; stepsons, Dale Bevell and wife, Laura, of Goldsboro and Dwayne Bevell and wife, Heather, of Goldsboro; stepgrandchildren, Beth Overman, Betsy Roberson and husband, Ryan, Dave Overman and wife, Vennie, Ryan, Josuha, Jaden and Maddox Bevell; and stepgreat-grandson, Wade Roberson.

The family requests memorials be made to Shrine Children's Hospital, 403 E. Front St., New Bern, N.C., 28560, or First Baptist Church, 125 S. John St., Goldsboro, N.C., 27530.

The family will receive friends at the church following the service in the fellowship hall of First Baptist Church and other times at the home.
