Helen Kelly Columbus, 87, long-time resident of Mount Olive, and native of the Red Hill community in Duplin County, passed away Monday afternoon, Sept. 7, 2015, while being cared for at Kitty Askins Hospice Center.

She was a member of First Baptist Church of Mount Olive and will be remembered for having been a nursery attendant for over 30 years, and for her loyal attendance in the Tru-Friendship Sunday School class. She was a member of the ladies auxiliaries of both the Mount Olive Rescue Squad and Mount Olive Lion's Club.

A well-known Mount Olive merchant, she owned and operated the Mount Olive franchise of Cato's for many years, after which she became associated with Belk-Tyler's in Mount Olive as a sales clerk.

Mrs. Columbus is survived by her husband, Cecil R. Columbus, of the home; a son and daughter-in-law, Nick and Terry Columbus of Goldsboro; two grandsons, Luther Thompson and his wife, Sherry, and Jeffrey Thompson, all of Mount Olive; two great-grandchildren, Taylor Thompson and Chase King, both of Mount Olive; a brother and sister-in-law, J. T. and Maxine Kelly of Rose Hill; two brothers-in-law, Jim Dyer and wife, Ruth Ann, of Wake Forest, and Herbert Dyer of New Hampshire; and another sister-in-law, Doris C. Edwards of Princeton, W. Va.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Jerry R. Thompson; and her parents, William and Eloise Whitfield Kelly.

The family of Mrs. Columbus will receive friends Friday, Sept. 11, from 1 p.m. until 2:15 p.m. at Christian Life Center of First Baptist Church, followed by a funeral service at 2:30 p.m. in the sanctuary, officiated by Dr. Dennis Atwood, after which burial will take place in Wayne Memorial Park. Flowers are welcome, or memorial gifts may be made to Kitty Askins Hospice, 107 Handley Park Court, Goldsboro, N.C. 27534.

Arrangements are being handled by Tyndall Funeral Directors.
