VIRGINIA MODLIN GARRISON

May 9, 1922-Aug. 18 2015

Virginia Modlin Garrison 93, longtime Mount Olive resident, passed away Tuesday, Aug. 18, at Rex Hospital.

Mrs. Garrison was born May 9, 1922 in Greenville, S.C., to Henry and Luna Modlin.

She grew up in Goldsboro, N.C., and attended Converse College, and graduated from Woman's College in Greensboro, N.C.

For 71 years, she was married to Paul Garrison Jr., and together they raised three children on Pollock Street in Mount Olive -- daughter, Julie, son, Paul III (wife, Jacqui) and daughter, Betsy.

She was the very proud grandmother of four grandchildren -- Katie Intihar (Andrew), Julia Garrison, Sam Bean and Paul Bean.

A gifted musician, Virginia was organist for First United Methodist Church in Mount Olive for 35 years, and instrumental in the church's purchase of a pipe organ.

She never met a stranger or a pair of Ferragamo shoes she didn't like. She was an incredible cook, who enjoyed entertaining friends at home. Above all else, she was the most special mother and grandmother a child could ever hope for.

In addition to her husband, children and grandchildren, Virginia is survived by her sister, Betsy Snyder; her brother and sister-in-law, Henry and Sallie Modlin; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Graveside funeral services will be Friday, Aug. 21, at 2 p.m. in Maplewood Cemetery beside 317 E. James St. in Mount Olive, N.C.

Following the graveside service, the family will receive friends in the fellowship hall of First United Methodist Church, 120 E. James St., Mount Olive, N.C.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 420, Mount Olive, N.C., 28365, or Springmoor Endowment, 1500 Sawmill Road, Raleigh, N.C., 27615.
