Lonnie Martin Champlin Jr., 79, Goldsboro, passed away Wednesday morning at Wayne Memorial Hospital surrounded by his family.

Lonnie was born in Concordia Parish, La., Aug. 2, 1935, to the late Lonnie M. Champlin and Maudell Pecanty Champlin.

He retired as an electrician with E.I. Dupont after 21 years of service.

Lonnie was a member of Walker Memorial United Methodist Church, and proudly served his country in the United States Air Force.

He retired after 20 years of service from Pinewood Fire Department, where he served as assistant chief.

Lonnie was an unusually fine man. He was adored by his family for whom he was a source of joy and strength, but also by countless others, from old friends to new acquaintances, all of whom were struck by his quiet generosity, his kind and unassuming intelligence and his innate courteousness.

He cherished his wife, and was a role model to his entire family.

A service celebrating Lonnie's life will be held at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 31, 2014, in the chapel of Seymour Funeral Home, with the Rev. Sherman Gutherie officiating. Interment will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 1, 2014, at Wayne Memorial Park with military honors.

Lonnie is survived by his wife of 50 years, Rose Butts Champlin; daughter, Lola Creech of Raleigh; son, Dale Champlin of Raleigh; daughter, Vickie Corbett of LaGrange; five grandchildren, Jodi West and husband, Tim, Paula West and husband, Chris, Caroline Corbett, Ashley Creech and Lindsey Creech; and seven great grandchildren, Grace, Anna, Emalia, Coy, Cade, Brylee and Parker.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Cures for the Colors in care of Southeastern Oncology Medical Center, 203 Cox Blvd., Goldsboro, N.C., 27534.

The family will receive friends Friday, Oct. 31, 2014, from 6 to 7 p.m. at Seymour Funeral Home and other times at the home of Vickie Corbett.
