Died June 19, 2014

Henry James "Cookie" Cook Sr., 70, Grantham, passed away Thursday, June 19, 2014, at Kitty Askins Hospice Center surrounded by his family.

Cookie was born in Darby, Pa., to the late Henry Byron Cook and Margaret Merron Cook.

He had retired from A.P.V. Baker and the Wayne County Public school system, having served at Southern Wayne High School.

Cookie proudly served his country in the United States Air Force.

He was a member and past master of Mill Creek Masonic Lodge No. 125 A.F. & A.M. in Newton Grove, Order of the Eastern Star No. 267, where he served as the worthy patron and as district deputy, and Order of the Eastern Star No. 54, where he served as worthy patron.

Cookie had also served on Grantham Rescue Squad for 23 years, and helped organize and served as the advisor for the Junior Rescue Squad.

Cookie was a longtime member of Eureka Christian Church in Grantham. He was devoted to his church, and served as a deacon, elder, Sunday school teacher and Sunday school superintendent.

Earlier this year, Cookie was voted Elder Emeritus at Eureka Christian Church.

Above all, he loved spending time with his family and friends, especially his grandchildren and his great-grandchild. He will be missed.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 21, 2014, at Eureka Christian Church, with the Rev. Frank Purvis and the Rev. Deborah Stilley officiating. Interment will follow at Britt Family Cemetery on Crows Foot Road in Mount Olive with Masonic Rites and military
honors.

Cookie is survived by his wife of almost 51 years, Margaret Joyner Cook; sons, Henry James "Jimmy" Cook Jr. and wife, Caroline, of Angier and Steven J. Cook of Goldsboro; grandchildren, Elizabeth Rose Scattareggia and Matthew Cale Cook; great-grandchild, Logan Cooper; and sister, Constance Sloan of Florida.

He is also survived by his mother-in-law, Nina Joyner; sister-in-law, Iris J. Weaver and husband, J.L., of Mount Olive; and brothers-in-law, Bobby Joyner and wife, Carol, and Gordan Joyner and wife, Lena, all of Four Oaks, Wayne Joyner of Alexander, N.C., Ricky Joyner and wife, Lee, of Mount Olive and Danny Joyner and wife, Angela, of Four Oaks.

In addition to his parents, Cookie was preceded in death by his brother, Richard Cook.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be given to Eureka Christian Church, 2036 Dobbersville Road, Mount Olive, N.C., 28365.

The family will receive friends Friday, June 20, 2014, at Seymour Funeral Home from 6 to 8 p.m. and other times at his home in Grantham.
