Joseph Marion Whitley Jr., known as "Joe," passed away Thursday, April 10, 2014. A native of Greene County, he was born June 3, 1948, the son of the late Joseph Marion Whitley and Jimmie Smith Lamb.

Following graduation from Greene Central High School, Joe served his country in the United States Air Force during the Vietnam War. After returning home, he made his home in Pikeville, N.C. He retired from DuPont. Joe was a member of Belfast Pentecostal Holiness Church, where he served as a deacon. An avid fisherman, he truly found joy in helping others, especially his family and friends.

Funeral services will be held Monday at 2 p.m. from the chapel of Howell Funeral Home & Crematory in Goldsboro, with visitation from 1 p.m. until 1:45 p.m. Interment will follow at Wayne Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at other times at the residence, 132 Crossbow Drive, Pikeville.

Joe is survived by his wife, Sharon Jackson Whitley; daughter, Crystal Whitley Daughtry and fiancé, James Jackson; son, Joseph Whitley III; grandchildren, Destinee Clayton and fiancé, Justin James, Dylan Daughtry, Kenna Daughtry, Jon Jackson and wife, Brittney, Aaron Jackson and wife, Emily, and one great-grandchild, Maddox; sister, Linda Daniels and husband, Rufus; brother, Gerald Whitley; sister-in-law, Linda Frost; and brother-in-law, Jimmy Jackson and wife, Lib. Joe is also survived by his devoted friends, Ma Gooding, James and Jan Sykes, Joan Peele and Lavern and Billie Gooding; very special nurse's aide, Lisa Braxton; very special registered nurse, Karen Earnest; and Joe's two precious dogs, Baby and Jake.

He was preceded in death by his sister, Joan Heath.

The family is in the care of Howell Funeral Home & Crematory in Goldsboro.
