VIOLA BARWICK GRANTHAM

Dec. 8, 1921 - April 11, 2014

Viola Barwick Grantham, 92, went to be with her Lord on Friday, April 11, 2014, at Kitty Askins Hospice Center after a short illness.

Viola was born in Wayne County on Dec. 8, 1921, to the late Franklin L. and Onita Herring Barwick. She was married to the late Harold June Grantham, who preceded her in death on Oct. 19, 2003.

Viola was a graduate of Mount Olive High School and later attended business school. She began her career with the Farm Office where she met husband, Harold. They later married and together they owned and operated Grantham Supply in Grantham until their retirement in 1994. Viola also served the Grantham Community as the postmistress for the Grantham Post Office for 31 years and for many years was a den mother for the Cub Scout troop in Grantham.

Viola was a longtime member of Selah Christian Church in Grantham. She was devoted to her church, serving as treasurer of the Christian Women's Fellowship, and was involved in many activities where she utilized her gifts and abilities to share the love of God. She also enjoyed quilting with the Flying Needles as well as the Selah Church Quilters. The life she lived, one of grace and Christian love, could not be diminished by the sickness that she endured. Her sweet smile and gentle ways will be remembered by everyone who knew her.

The family will receive friends Sunday, April 13, 2014, from 2 until 3 p.m. at Selah Christian Church followed by a service celebrating Viola's life at 3 p.m. in the sanctuary, with the Rev. Patrick Muston officiating. Interment will follow in the Grantham Family Cemetery.

Viola is survived by her son, James Harold "Jim" Grantham and wife, Brenda; daughter, Catherine Marie "Cathy" Grady and husband, Tony; grandchildren, Ted Grantham and wife, Debbie, Beverly Anderson and husband, Mike, and Angela Bain and husband, Joe; and great-grandchildren, Whitney Grantham, Hannah Grantham and fiancé, Travis Lane, Allie Dunekack, Tyler Dunekack, Tanner Bain, Matthew Bain, Andrew Bain, Sarah Bain, Garrett Barfield and fiancée, Allie Armellino, Katie Anderson, Sarah Anderson, Mary Anderson and Grant Anderson. She is also survived by her sister, Eula Barwick Malpass of Mount Olive.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by her son, Frank Michael Grantham; and 11 siblings.

We would like to give a very special thank you to the wonderful staff at Kitty Askins Hospice Center for the love and care they provided for Viola during her final days. Simple words cannot express our gratitude.

Flowers are welcome or memorials may be made to Selah Christian Church, in care of Jean Hollowell, 3304 Stevens Mill Road, Goldsboro, NC 27530.
