Gov C.M. Friend, 94, Goldsboro, died Monday, March 24, 2014, at Crystal Coast Hospice House in Newport.

Gov was born in Portsmouth, Va., Nov. 16, 1919, to the late Walter Friend and Marjorie Taylor Friend. He was married to the late Margaret Trachtenberg and the late Rachel Friend.

Gov was retired from E.I. DuPont.

He was a member and past exalted ruler of Goldsboro Elks Lodge No. 139 B.P.O.E., and was a member of Wayne Masonic Lodge No. 112 A.F. and A.M.

Gov was a Shriner and a member of the Sudan Temple Wrecking Crew.

A graveside service with Masonic rites will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at Edgecombe Memorial Park, 2879 U.S. 258 South, Tarboro, N.C.

Gov is survived by his daughter, Jacki Surles of Emerald Isle; sons, Bobby Friend and wife, Lou, of Grifton and Bill Friend and wife, Caryn, of Cary; sister, Margaret Kerr and husband, Bobby, of Florida; and his brother, Ed Friend and wife, Dorothy, of Virginia Beach, Va.

He is also survived by his grandchildren, Pamela Gaines and husband, David, of Jacksonville, Greg Surles of Dover, Jonathan Friend of Wake Forest and Lisa Munns and husband, Tony, of Garner, and seven great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Shriners Children's Hospital, 403 E. Front St., New Bern, N.C., 28560.

The family will receive friends Wednesday from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at Seymour Funeral Home.
