CORNELIUS JOHNSON

SNOW HILL -- Cornelius Johnson, 90, died Monday morning, Jan. 27, 2014, at Vidant Medical Center in Greenville. A native of Greene County, he was born Sept. 3, 1923, the son of Herbert and Minnie Ginn Johnson.

Like many of his generation, Mr. Johnson made his livelihood tending the land as a farmer. He took great pride in not only his row crops, but also the vegetable garden that he planted each year. Mr. Johnson believed strongly in helping his neighbors and as such was a charter member of Fort Run Fire Department and served as its chief for more than 20 years. He was a member of Free Gospel PFWB Church.

Funeral services will be held Friday at 7 p.m. at the chapel of Taylor-Tyson Funeral Service, with the Rev. Danny Hamm and the Rev. Terry Heath officiating. Committal services will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at Snow Hill Cemetery.

Mr. Johnson is survived by his wife of 69 years, Martha Lee Sutton Johnson; a son, Danny Johnson and wife, Janice, of Snow Hill; grandsons, Allen Johnson and wife, Michelle, of Goldsboro and Jay Tyson and wife, Mary, of Farmville; great-grandchildren, Brittany Johnson, Seth Johnson, Sydney Johnson, Anna Tyson and Chelsea Tyson; a great-great-grandchild, Jayden Johnson; sisters, Evelyn Johnson Chase of Snow Hill and Blanche Johnson Head of Newport News, Va.; and a brother, Hugh Johnson of Kenly. He was preceded in death by a beloved grandson, Neil Johnson.

The family will receive friends on Friday immediately following the service and at other times at the home of Danny and Janice Johnson, 22 Mooring Lane, Snow Hill.
