KATHERINE DAVIS SMITH

Katherine Davis Smith went with the angel band to her immortal home Aug. 17, 2013.

Funeral services for her will be at St. Joseph United Methodist Church, 20 W. Church St., Pikeville, N.C., at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 20, 2013. Graveside service will follow at Davis Cemetery on Frank Price Church Road in Wilson County.

Katherine was born in Pikeville, N.C., April 20, 1923, the daughter of Lonnie C. Davis and Carrie Perkins Davis.

She graduated second in her class at Pikeville High School. She obtained her undergraduate degree in primary education from the Woman's College of the University of North Carolina/UNC Greensboro and her master's degree in education with certification as a teacher, principal and supervisor from East Carolina University. She later did further graduate work in early childhood education at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, including a study tour to Europe.

She also worked as a teaching principal at Eureka School. She retired in 1985 after teaching 35 years in Wayne and Wilson counties.

After retirement, Katherine became a volunteer at Northwest Elementary School, Cherry Hospital and Wayne County Homes for the Aged.

She was a charter member and first president of the North Carolina Cotton Museum/Northern Wayne Heritage Museum. She represented both the museum and Pikeville on the board of the Wayne County Historical Association, of which she was a life member.

A member of St. Joseph United Methodist Church, she served on many committees, including chairing the church council. She also taught Sunday school and Bible school.

Katherine was predeceased by her husband, Glenn A. Smith; brothers, Lawrence, John and Eugene Davis; and sister, Elizabeth Davis Hall Crumpler.

She is survived by her son, Alan Smith (Pam) of Goldsboro; daughter, Jennifer Smith Hooks (Jake) of Wilmington, N.C.; grandchildren, Adam (Kathy), Kevin, and Sharon Hooks, Aaren Smith Brumley (Wayne), Blake and Sawyer Smith; as well as great-grandchildren, Amylynn, Addison and Aiden Hooks and Layla Brumley.

The family will greet friends in the fellowship hall of St. Joseph United Methodist Church in Pikeville, N.C., following the graveside service.

Flowers would be welcome. Donations can also be made to Methodist Home for Children, Raleigh, N.C.

Arrangements by Howell Funeral Home and Crematory in Goldsboro.
