ALTON HARRELL BARFIELD SR.

Died March 30, 2013

RALEIGH -- Alton Harrell Barfield Sr., 76, 1304 Beverly Drive, departed this life Saturday, March 30, 2013, at his home.

Born in Wayne County, he was the son of the late
Walter Barfield Sr. and Katie Kornegay Barfield.

He was a 1955 graduate of Carver High School, and attended North Carolina College, now North Carolina Central University.

He was a veteran of the United States Army, where he served from 1961 to 1963. While in Korea, he served as the captain of the 1st Cavalry Division Automatic Rifle Team.

He worked mainly for the federal government, and retired after 301/2 years of civil service.

A celebration of life service will be held Friday at noon at Martin Street Baptist Church, with the Rev. Dr. Earl C. Johnson officiating. Burial will follow in Carolina Biblical Gardens.

He is survived by his wife, Evelyn N. Barfield of the home; two children, Alton "Al" Barfield Jr. and Alicia Barfield of Raleigh; two brothers, Joseph (Hedwig) Barfield of Fayetteville and Thomas (Everlena) Barfield Sr. of Dudley; a sister, Lela Mae (Joe) King of Faison; and a host of other relatives and friends.

A time of viewing and reflection will be held Thursday from 3 to 7 p.m. at Garris Funeral Home chapel. Visitation at the church will be held Friday from 11 a.m. to noon.

Garris Funeral Home is serving the family.
