LURA PIERCE HINES

Feb. 10, 1924-March 31, 2013

MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. -- Lura Pierce Hines, 89, a Wayne County native, died peacefully in Mount Pleasant, S.C., March 31, 2013, under the compassionate care of Hospice of Charleston.

Mrs. Hines enjoyed a full and happy life.

She lived in the Providence Church community in Goldsboro most of her life, but moved to the Charleston, S.C., area in 2012 to be closer to her daughter and her husband and her son and his wife.

She relished her life in Goldsboro, and thought there was no place in the world she'd rather be than "the old Grantham Road."

She led an active, vibrant life with her many friends, neighbors, Providence Church pals and her family.

Even as her short-term memory faded, her memory and recollections of her family and her friends and neighbors in Goldsboro remained sharp and sound.

She was an avid and relentless gardener, and never saw a flower she didn't love or a weed she didn't reach down and pull up.

Lura was predeceased by her parents, Marvin Thomas Pierce and Ebbie Woodard Pierce, and by her husband of 29 years, William Harry Hines.

She was also predeceased by her two brothers, Carl Pierce and Hoover Lee Pierce. She loved her brothers and their families in a big way.

Lura is survived by her daughter, Brenda Uttaro, and son-in-law, Jerry Uttaro, of Mount Pleasant, S.C.; by her son, Neal Hines, and daughter-in-law, Gail Hines, of Augusta, Ga.; a granddaughter, Carrie Hines Jeffers; and two great-grandchildren, Hines and Landry Jeffers.

She is survived, also, by multiple nieces and nephews; her late brother Hoover's wife, Sarah Pierce; and by her late brother Carl's wife, Helen Pierce.

Lura and Helen had a special and loving relationship. They spent many happy times together and loved each other as if they were real sisters.

Funeral arrangements are being handled by Shumate-Faulk Funeral Home.

A viewing at the funeral home is scheduled for Wednesday, April 3, from 9 to 10 a.m. The family will receive friends on that date from 10 to 11 a.m. at Shumate-Faulk Funeral Home, immediately followed by a memorial service at 11 a.m. A private graveside service for family members will follow the memorial service.

In lieu of flowers, it was Lura's wish that memorials be made to the Hal and Eldean Pierce Scholarship fund at East Carolina University School of Nursing. This endowed fund was established in 2006 in honor of Lura's nephew, Hal Pierce, and his late and beloved wife, Eldean Pierce, a revered and longtime educator at the School of Nursing. The scholarship provides funds to nursing students who excel academically. Contributions can be sent to the following address: East Carolina University Medical Foundation, 525 Moye Blvd., Greenville, N.C., 27834, Attn: Hal and Eldean Pierce Scholarship Fund.
