John was called home to be with his Lord and savior, Jesus Christ, March 14, 2013, in Raleigh, N.C., at Wake Medical Center.

He was the son of the late John T. Council Sr. and Nancy U. Council.

He was born July 1, 1953, in Duplin County.

John was educated in Duplin County public schools. He graduated in 1971 from North Duplin High School.

John worked at Calypso Plywood Co. for many years, and later joined the team at Georgia-Pacific of Dudley, N.C. He worked at Georgia-Pacific for 34 years from which he retired.

He met and married the love of his life, Peggy Jean Ingram. John and Peggy were united in holy matrimony Aug. 21, 1973, and to this union four children were born. His devotion was to his wife, children and family.

His hobbies were football and basketball. He also loved gardening and family.

John joined Holy Temple United Holy Church of America, where he became a deacon.

He was preceded in death by a son, John Cecil Council, and a brother, Henry Edward Usher.

He leaves to cherish his memories his wife, Peggy Jean Council of the home; three children, Meshia (Tyheim) Davis of Mount Olive, N.C., Carlos (Hope) Council of Mount Olive, N.C., and Christopher T. (Keshia) Council of Warsaw, N.C.; nine grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; his siblings, Leslie Ann Council of Mount Olive, N.C., Renee (Leonard) Wilson of Gastonia, N.C., and Lendell (Audrey) Council of Mount Olive, N.C.; his in-laws, Winsor Jr. Ingram of Mount Olive, N.C., Everlena (Thomas) Barfield of Dudley, N.C., Dorothy Inez (Ronald) Ward of Mount Olive, N.C., minister Jerome (Thelma) Ingram of Dudley, Paul Ingram of Mount Olive, N.C., and Victoria Ann (Paul) Robinson of Mount Olive, N.C.; his uncle, Roosevelt Usher of Mount Olive, N.C.; his aunts, Mildred Faison Wright of Warsaw, N.C., Elizabeth Truzy of Dudley, N.C., and Gloria Dyson of Calypso, N.C.; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.

A visitation will be held today from 4 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Mount Gilead Missionary Baptist Church in Mount Olive.

Immediately following the services, the family will be escorted to Wayne Memorial Park South for the interment.

The family is receiving friends at 124 Andrews Circle, Mount Olive.

Arrangements have been entrusted to E.M. Matthews Funeral Home and Cremation Inc.
