Oscar Stanton Perkins, 97, was reunited with his loving wife, Dorothy Perkins, Friday, Feb. 1, 2013. He passed away peacefully in his home surrounded by his loving family.
Funeral services will be held Monday, Feb. 4, 2013, at 4 p.m. at Pine Forest UMC in Rosewood with the Rev. Vann Spivey, of Pine Forest United Methodist Church, and the Rev. Calvin Craft, of Pinkney Missionary Baptist Church, officiating. Family will receive friends and relatives following the service from 5 until 7 p.m. and at other times at the home located at 950 Old Kenly Road, Pikeville. Interment will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Pine Forest Cemetery.
Stanton was born in Wayne County Jan. 9, 1916, to Timothy Stanton Perkins and Ruth Hooks Perkins of the Rosewood Community. Stanton was a Scout master for the Pine Forest Troop for several years. Stanton began working as a clerk for Weils Fertilizer Company. After working many years for them and farming, he worked for the U.S. Postal Service as a clerk in the Goldsboro office. Then he was a rural mail carrier for 16 years before retiring in 1978. Stanton then worked with PerFlo Tours for several years before beginning a long series of travels with his wife, Dot. They visited all 50 states and even traveled some in Canada. He lived a full life and loved sharing stories of his many travels with family and friends.
Stanton is survived by his daughters, Betsy Hill and husband, John, of Mount Olive, Karen Collins and husband, Lionel, of Nahunta; and his son, Stephen Perkins of Nahunta; his brother Robert Edward Perkins of Goldsboro; his sister Helen Paige McLean and husband, Tom McLean, of Florida. His grandchildren, Johnny Hill of Houston, Texas, Tommy Hill of Morehead City, Kevin Perkins of Nahunta, Christy Duval and husband, Danny, of Biloxi, Miss., Wendy Crane and husband, Tom, of Rosewood, Carl Perkins and wife, Kim, of Fremont, Danny Edgerton and wife, Melissa, of Nahunta. His great-grandchildren are Christopher Hill, Emily Perkins, Courtney Duval, Amanda Walters, Justin Edgerton, Cameron Hill, Joey Crane, Carly Perkins, Carson Crane, Cody Perkins, Tyson Edgerton, Miranda Mooring and her children, Collin Beasley and Audawen Mooring. He has several surviving in-laws: Marie Perkins, wife of James; Margie Perkins, wife of Howard; Harold Ellis and wife, Martha Ann, Carolyn Thompson, Violetta Ellis, and Cleone Ellis. He also has many nieces and nephews.
Stanton was preceded in death by his loving wife, Dorothy Ellis Perkins, wife of 69 years; two sons Thomas Stanton Perkins and James Herman Perkins; brothers Alton Ray Perkins, Howard Miller Perkins, and James Hooks Perkins; and his sister, Ruth Marie Perkins.
