FREMONT-- James Brooks Ballance, 72, died Thursday at Vidant Medical Center in Greenville after several months of declining health.

A memorial service, conducted by the Rev. Dr. Powell Dew, will be held at 2 p.m. today at Shackleford-Howell Funeral Home in Fremont. The family will receive friends at the funeral home, following the service. At all other times, the family will receive friends at the home of William A. Ballance, 102 N. Vance St., Fremont. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Fremont Missionary Baptist Church, 108 N. Vance St., Fremont, N.C., 27830, or to a charity of one's choice.

He was the fourth child born to the late Alton Brooks Ballance and Estelle Aycock Ballance of Fremont. He is survived by a brother, William A. Ballance (Edna) of Fremont; and sisters, Anne B. May (Johnnie) of Greenville, and Susan B. Sawyer (Robert) of Greensboro. He is also survived by nephews, William A. Ballance Jr., M.D. (Lisa) and David R. Sawyer (Kathy), of Greenville, and the late Timothy E. Ballance (Kay) of Pikeville; and nieces Sylvia M. Ballance of Fremont, Ellen B. Barnes (Ray) of Clemmons; Mary Jon M. Pabst (Mark, DDS) of Greenville, and Carole S. Lawson (Chris) of Pilot Mountain. There is a host of great nephews and nieces.

Mr. Ballance graduated from Fremont High School and East Carolina University with undergraduate and master's degrees in English. He was elected to Who's Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges in the 1961-62 school year. He held memberships in the Tau Chapter of Phi Sigma Pi Fraternity and Sigma Tau Delta Fraternity. In 2002 he was inducted into the East Carolina University Educators Hall of Fame. Mr. Ballance was employed by the Greensboro City Schools (NC) from August 1962 to June 1992 serving Greensboro Grimsley High School as an English teacher, assistant principal, coach and head faculty athletic trainer.
