VIOLA A. MCKINNEY

Viola Atkins McKinney, 100, died Thursday evening, Nov. 15, 2012, at Willow Creek Nursing Home.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, Nov. 20, 2012, at 2 p.m. at Shumate-Faulk Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Wayne Memorial Park North on Old Grantham Road. The family will receive friends Monday evening from 7 until 9 at Shumate-Faulk Funeral Home.

She was born in Lee County to the late Simon and Mattie Womack Atkins and was married to the late William “Bill” McKinney.

Most of Viola’s adult life was spent in New York, where she continued her education and became an administrative assistant for the mayor of New York City and served in that capacity until her retirement. Viola was an adventurous person and an avid traveler to such places as India, Puerto Rico and Canada.

Upon her and her husband, Bill’s, retirement, they returned to North Carolina to spend their final years in Goldsboro. During her many years in Goldsboro, she was an active and supportive member of St. James AME Zion Church and a dedicated member of the Church’s Floral Club.

Mrs. McKinney is survived by many nieces, nephews, friends and a devoted couple, James and Doris Davis, who were like a son and daughter to her.
